Photos are extremely an extremely powerful way of presenting news and bringing a feeling of realism and humanity to a story that might seem incredibly distant. They are also effective in conveying emotion in seconds, just by taking one glance, whereas it might take someone a few minutes to read the story and express the same emotions. Additionally, I enjoy learning about current events, as do my friends and family, so I felt the subject matter was fitting as well.
